About Us

Who are we?

Claire and Rob at Cornwall Assist know first hand the barriers in enabling friends and loved ones to continue enjoying their lives, when life becomes less simple. It is due to these experiences Cornwall Assist was born - wanting to make a difference to people within their local community.

Finding solutions for an individual whilst supporting their family be they near or far.

Life brings many challenges, many of us have had times when we do not know how or where to find the help we need or for the ones we care for. From the first weeks of becoming a parent to our later years, we would all hope to continue living a fulfilled and independent life. Combating loneliness and isolation can be as simple as a reliable and friendly face having time to share stories and listen to or being able to access safe, comfortable accessible transport to get to the places you want to go, with the support you may need.

Acknowledging that we are complex beings we will provide a service which puts the individual at the heart of what we do. With families spread far and wide we can help close the distance by being there when you are not able to.

Knowing how busy our grown children are with their own families and work commitments or friends only able to help when they can, we can offer you an alternative option for help, support, and transport to be more independent.

Meet the team

Claire

We moved to Cornwall to be close to my extended family and offer my now grown up children, a simpler childhood.

I have worked within education, local council and hospitality sectors. Over the last 15years I have cared for and supported friends and family members whilst they needed focused help. From cancer diagnoses and the practicalities of attending treatment appointments to support for family members at the end of life of a loved one.

Currently supporting new parents in the first few months when everything seems new and a bit daunting gives them time to focus on bonding and finding new routines that work.

I have become one of the ‘sandwich generation’ and no its not that I love a sandwich! but caring for my children whilst practically caring for an elderly parent too. Finding the time and energy to ‘do it all’ can become overwhelming.

Both my parents became wheelchair users which changed the dynamics of our relationship and brought many challenges both supporting them physically and mentally. Finding solutions has become a skill which I relish.

The joy that this brings has driven me to want to support both individuals and families to enable them to ‘Live the Life they Love’

I have recently undertaken and completed various courses which has given me a greater depth of knowledge and understanding in areas which will be of benefit when working with our clients such as:

  • Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults

  • Understanding Dementia

  • Infection & Protection Control

  • Mental Health Awareness

  • Safe handing of Medication

  • Dementia Friend

Rob

Moving to Cornwall some 15 years ago with Claire and 3 children gave me the opportunity to concentrate on what is important in my life. Family.

Having spent most of my working life in retail travelling too many miles and working too many hours both in the UK and Europe and missing out on time being spent with Claire and the kids it was time to take stock and look at getting some of that elusive ‘work life balance’ that was so widely talked about.

Over the last 15 years, amongst other jobs I have been self employed for a period running a local community based magazine and also an award winning company delivering educational and fun Treasure Trails within Cornwall, getting people out and about in the fresh air. For the last eight years I have been in the tourism and hospitality industry.

Ironically, relocating to Cornwall moved me further away from my family, leaving my Dad , a brother and two sisters behind. This was something that later become challenging when both my Dad and Brother became very ill and sadly passed within a few years of each other.

Having lost my Mother many years ago, and more recently my Dad and Brother, made me think about the thousand of other families that go through the same thing year in year out. Not wanting to sound all airy fairy about it, it was like a ‘defining moment ‘ that made me realise that life is about people and the shared experiences good or bad.

So Cornwall Assist was born. I would be lying if I said it’s not about the money, because there are mouths to feed and a mortgage to pay but the ability to assist people and put a smile on someone’s face is really what success means to me now.

Bertie

He has many talents but writing is not one of them!

Therefore he needed a little help coming up with a few words.

Very much part of the team, Bertie our Cockapoo has the ability to keep us sane in this sometimes crazy world we live in. One look into his ‘puppy eyes’ gives us a sense of ‘everything is going to be alright’. He is also good to share thoughts with and sound off to. We are sure he has an opinion, but he is the true ‘silent partner’ in our business.

If you are a Dog lover we are more than happy to bring him along to appointments if he will help put a smile on your face,

Bertie is a great companion . He is happy to waive his fee in exchange for a tickle under the chin or a reassuring pat on the head.
